Special Holiday Schedule! December 22nd to January 4th

Exciting Holiday Classes!

We are really excited to offer a specialized Holiday Schedule at both of our locations in Ottawa and Barrhaven.  While most Martial Art Schools shut done completely over the Christmas Break we wanted to offer our clients the opportunity to receive the best possible training.  That’s why we arranged to have an all new and exclusive line up of classes including the radically different concept of Thai- Jitsu and and a special Holiday Fitness Bootcamp!

Thai-jitsu  6 to 6:45pm Thai-Jitsu is a special holiday class. It’s a hybrid class that incorporates elements from Muay Thai striking art with jiu-jitsu locking and takedown maneuvers.  This class will be taught in a scaled manner, meaning core fundamentals will be studied, and more advanced concepts will be layered overtop for higher level participants.  This way, newer members won’t feel overwhelmed and the advance students will be properly challenged and satisfied. These classes are perfect for our core martial arts members (Jr. and adult), and of course our MMA and BJJ team members will feel right at home.  As an added bonus, for those who are eligible and want to free roll after class they will have access to the BJJ LAB area at the back of the dojo.

Learn effective Self-Defense strategies.

Holiday fitness bootcamp 7 to 7:45pm Get a head start on your new year’s fitness resolution with our holiday fitness bootcamp!  This high energy, rock’n class will combine your favorite elements of our fitness kickboxing program and cage rage training plus some exclusive combat conditioning exercises guaranteed to burn away the holiday’s excess calorie intake. Great for kickboxing and pro kick members alike, and our cage fitness junkies will be definitely be satisfied.

Burn away the Holiday’s excess calorie intake, with our special fitness Bootcamp Class!

FAQ (about the Holiday Schedule)

Q. If I’m a kickboxing student can I tryout the Thai-Jitsu class? How much extra does it cost?

A.Yes, of course you can try it out, just remember to take it slow initially; don’t try to blast through the techniques like you normally would during your kickboxing class.  Focus on studying and perfecting the movements before revving up the speed and intensity.  There’s no extra cost, it’s completely complimentary, please consider it an early Christmas present!

Q.If I’m a regular MA, BJJ or MMA member can I try out the holiday boot camp?

A.We encourage you to participate in the bootcamp.  It‘ll keep you lean and mean for the holidays and will allow you to get back into the grove post Christmas break much faster.

Q.How much extra is it for the bootcamp?

A. Believe or not….. This is on us! We want our students to stay in shape so we’re giving these classes away as an early Christmas gift!

Q.If I have an out of town guest who also trains, can they try it out? If so, for how much?

A. The more the merrier! If bringing in your friend means that we see more of you over the holidays, then all the better.  Just be sure to come in at least 20 to 30 minutes early, this way you can show your guest around and give them a few pointers. Of course, we’ll need them to fill out some visitor forms as well.  All we ask is that you be a good host a train closely to and with your guest, make sure to take time and introduce them to the instructors, staff, and some of your fellow classmates.  As for fees…. we’re feeling extremely generous this holiday season and will gift this training opportunity to them at no cost on your behalf.

Q. What do I wear?

A. Wear your regular workout clothes (no shoes of course). Thai-Jitsu can be done in a gi (martial arts uniform) or kickboxing workout clothes. Just wear what you normally do and you’ll be fine 🙂

Q. If my membership is inactive can I reactivate to take advantage of the holiday fitness bootcamp or Thai-Jitsu class?

A. Yes and we will do you one better.  We’ll gift you that time and won’t officially start the clock on your membership until the New Year,  effectively giving you complete access to the school and programs for the rest of the year FREE!!! Just call in or email us to set up a quick appointment to dot the “i’s ” and cross the “t’s”.

What is the value of the martial arts?

Earning a BlackBelt is a Priceless experience!

I often get requests for how much should I pay for training and what is good value for my money?

A fair question but not easily answered, without putting it into context first.

I travel a lot with intent on keeping current with the global martial arts community and to confer with my peers from around the world.

At one of these international conferences, which was attended by thousands of black belts. They posed that exact question in a very unique and enlightening way.

I was impressed with the organizers foresight to take the opportunity and survey so many of the worlds top martial artist with a combined experience of tens of thousands of years of martial arts training. Mind boggling when you think of the collected resources pooled together for that week long conference.

One of the most enlightening questions was as follows:

“If you had the choice of receiving a million dollars cash in exchange for all your collected experience while earning your balck belt including the countless hours of grueling training, the injuries and set backs, the obstacles faced and overcome through perseverance and patience. The losses suffered in competition and victories pain stakingly realized through trial and error, if possible would you exchange all those hard earned memories for a million dollars?”

Before I reveal the answer I must first share with you that martial artists of different disciplines and styles rarely if ever agree upon anything. That’s why when at the end of the conference when the results from the survey was released I was awe struck with the outcome.

It was 100% completely unanimous that no one there at the conference would even consider trading the culminated knowlege and experience gained through earning a black belt, not even for a miillion dollars !

Even though the survey question was intentionally designed to focus on the trials and turbulatuons of training for black belt. Everyone who trains in martial arts like BJJ or karate understands there is two sides to every coin. Yes earning your black belt is very challenging as it should be, however during that process you can’t help but to grow as human being, make friends that share common interests an ideals, build your health both mentally and physically. This is why so many choose to train towards the black belt and beyond.

This is an extremely powerful testament to the value and benifits of training in the martial arts. Costs may very slightly from school to school but the value achieved through your training should and will be priceless!

My K2 Martial Arts Story (by Patrick Brooks)

Renshi & Pat

Students have many different reasons to try out Martial Arts.  We love hearing and getting to know our students perspectives & reviews for K2 Martial Arts in Ottawa.   Here’s Pat Brooks Story: “My K2 story began almost ten years ago when my friend Jeff approached me and asked if I’d like to join Therien Martial Arts with him at the Parkdale DoJo.  I’d done some Tae Kwon Do ten years earlier and that experience fizzled out at my orange belt.  It just wasn’t “doing it” for me.  I agreed to give Jiu-Jitsu a try and to my surprise the method of teaching was completely different.  Instead of memorizing and performing increasingly long katas in a stressful environment, I experienced friendly, patient and knowledgable Sensei in every class.  Over the next five years I worked with Sensei Scott, Sensei Aksell and Sensei Chris to name a few, until I reached my brown belt.

Then I hit a slump.  I was laid off from my job and created a contracting company and started working long hours.  My martial arts attendance dropped to zero due to a variety of factors, but basically I think I was just punishing myself and feeling somewhat depressed. Over the next year I spent all my time getting my business stable and I didn’t spend much time or thought on my physical well being.

Then a K2 Martial Arts opened up near my home in Barrhaven and one day I visited a family fun-day BBQ they held.  To my surprise, K2 was owned by all my best Sensei from Therien.  They greeted me warmly and invited and encouraged me to resume my martial arts journey with K2.  Upon brief reflection, I realized I had missed attending and decided to join K2.  After a while I was invited to join the Leadership group

Now, several years later, I’m very grateful for that chance meeting.  I had forgotten all the benefits of adopting a life style which includes the martial arts.  Not only have I gained the fitness benefits; increased endurance, weight-loss, increased stamina and better balance, but at K2 I’ve also gain self-confidence and other character-building life skills in balance with my physical fitness.  With Renshi Scott, Renshi Aksell and Sensei Chris to name a few in the K2 instructor family, I’ve been receiving world-class instruction and leadership.

During my training, I still find it tough to remember all the techniques, but my mental and muscle memory is getting better with practice.  I’ve noticed a little age creeping in; my knees are not the greatest and I seem to have mild asthma.  These are small things that nag at me but I try to not let them get in my way.  After a particularly strenuous class, I feel great, knowing that I have pushed my personal envelope just a little bit more.  I have no allusions about my future as a martial artist; I’m no budding Bruce Lee, but nor do I have any doubts about my current progress.  I am improving.

I’ve come to understand that the martial arts have become a valued part of my life, and one of my preferred ways of getting and keeping in shape.  I’m not driven to reach a particular belt level where I can say I’m done, nor am I particulrily interested in competitions.  Instead, I strive to steadfastly be the best I can be, and the K2 staff have been consistent in supporting my progression at a rate which I can sustain, in the ever-present balancing act between my work, my family and my health.

K2 Martial Arts has granted me the opportunity to continue my martial arts journey, which I hope to continue for many years.  My biggest problem now seems to be finding the time to attend all the available classes which complement my favourite, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, such as cage-fitness, mixed-martial arts and kick boxing.  I look forward to the challenge!”

Halloween Safety Tips

Halloween should be good old fashioned scary fun, but also it should be a safe and friendly environment for all.

Hello fellow Ottawa trick-or-treater’s, it’s that time of year again when all our inner ghouls and goblins surface, but please remembers  it’s also a time to practice the martial arts principles of awareness and personal safety.  Now is when our children celebrate Halloween and we recommend the following suggestions to follow.

Keep in mind a cool, quick costume can be their martial arts uniform, but be cautious of any weapons they may want to carry with them, so no one gets poked or hurt.

For many people, autumn events like Halloween and Harvest Day are fun times to attend parties, and eat yummy treats. These events are also opportunities to provide E nutritious snacks, be physically active, and focus on safety.

Below are tips to help make the festivities fun and safe for trick-or-treaters and party guests:

EXPECTING TRICK-OR-TREATERS OR PARTY GUESTS?

  • Provide healthier treats for trick-or-treaters, such as low calorie treats and drinks. For party guests, offer a variety of fruits, vegetables, and cheeses.
  • Use party games and trick-ot-treat time as an opportunity for kids to get their daily dose of 60 minutes of physical activity.
  • Be sure walking ares and stairs are bright and free of obstacles that could result in falls.
  • Keep candle lit jack-o’lanterns and luminaries away from doorsteps, walkways, landings, and out of the reach of pets and small children, and never leave them unattended.
  • Remind drivers to watch out for trick-or-treaters and to drive safely.

Follow these tips to help make the festivities fun and safe for everyone!

K2 Martial Arts helps Fight Cancer!

Recently, K2 Martial Arts hosted it’s annual charity mini golf event.  This family day activity was well received; many students and their friends participated in playing mini putt with their coaches and Sensei’s.  This event was held in honour of  the Canadian Cancer Society, which is a national organization whose purpose is to promote the complete eradication of cancer, and to help those living with cancer enhance their quality of life.

Although the mini putt event was a great family experience in the spirit of the Martial Arts, our ultimate goal was to raise awareness and funds for the Canadian Cancer Society.  The Canadian Cancer Society will use the funds towards important research to help combat cancer and creating a world where no one fears cancer.

In the various martial arts disciplines, such as Karate, Tae Kwon Do, and Jiu-Jitsu, we understand the value of courage.  K2 appreciates the the spirit and strength of character shown by those who champion the fight against cancer.  K2 Martial Arts supports all the great work done by the  Canadian Cancer Society staff and volunteers. We understand that they are motivated through compassion; they work tirelessly with consideration, respect, and empathy for those families and individuals affected by cancer.  They share the K2 Martial Arts beliefs that all people should be treated with courtesy, respect and dignity.  We appreciate the effort to build an environment that welcomes volunteers and gives them an opportunity to contribute to this admirable cause.  We encourage our students and staff to participate in community causes and national charity organizations like the Canadian Cancer Society, so they may have a positive impact on their community.

A special thanks to Coach Art who worked extra hard behind the scenes to make this event a success.  We are very proud of all the young students who participated and made a contribution of one thousand dollars towards the Canadian Cancer Society.

Here’s a short video of the presentation day and some kind thoughts from the Canadian Cancer Society representative.

Reviews for k2 martial arts children’s program!

Every class we choose one student who is displaying a black belt quality. Wether that being patience, enthusiasms, courtesy to others, or courage in trying something new. We want the students to understand that these qualities lead to success & happiness inside the martial arts class and outside of the class in everyday life.  We explain how the honorary black belt is an award that means they can achieve whatever they put their minds too.  Parents appreciate the concept of allowing the children to mentally build positive images of success. Please take a moment and listen to this parents grateful message left on our voicemail.  Comments like this mean the world to us and teachers and educators.  We care so much about each and every child’s experience and strive to help them reach their maximum potential through our specialized martial arts programs.

K2 Martial Arts Wins Big with Matt Hughes!

We were very fortunate to host UFC legend Matt Hughes at K2 Martial Arts in Ottawa Ontario Canada.  Matt Hughes is an UFC hall of famer, former two-time welterweight champion. Matt Hughes has successfully defended his welterweight title a record setting seven times.  During his rein as UFC champion Matt Hughes was widely considered pound for pound the best fighter of his time and is now in contention to being remembered as one of of the best of all time.  He holds victories over many  great fighters such as Carlos Newton, Renzo Gracie, Matt Serra, Sean Sherk, George St-Pierre, and Royce Gracie too name a few.  When visiting Ottawa Matt hughes conducted a special MMA(Mixed Martial Arts) seminar at K2 Martial Arts.  This exclusive class was limited to a lucky 50 participants who were treated to first hand knowledge from one of the sports greatest competitors.  Matt Hughes is a great competitor and champion, but on this day he showed a different side to his persona, the one of being a great family man and coach.  He was so patient and thoughtful, he made the rounds connecting with each student on a personal level.

In this video you can see Matt Hughes grappling with students from K2 Martial Arts.  What a treat to see this amazing athlete in action.

As you can see Matt was extremely relaxed and so approachable.  We are tremendously grateful that Matt took time to visit the nations capital and share his incredible experience.
